I Remember Taci

I remember when Taci would drive me to school in the morning, and sometimes I’d be late because of the train tracks.

I remember when Taci walked up the stairs and his ankles would crack.

I remember when Taci shared his grapefruit with me, and when he peeled me a big piece he said it was a ‘horsie bite’. If it was bigger than that, it was an ‘elephant bite’, and the biggest one was a ‘buffalo bite’.

I remember going to the Canadian National Exhibition and a carnival game would chant ‘doggie doggie, buffalo buffalo”. Taci would say that for years later, when he was in a good mood.

I remember when Taci took me to my guitar lessons.

I remember when Taci would play the banjo at night.

I remember Taci teaching judo, and wrestling with his students.

I remember when Taci and I went to the 1976 Olympic Games, and I asking him why he wasn’t fighting in the Judo matches with the other men.

I remember when Taci watched NHL hockey. He would ask me to get him a beer from the fridge, and I’d secretly take a sip before bringing it to him.

I remember when Charlotte’s Web premiered on television but I cried because I wasn’t allowed to watch it, because of hockey.

I remember when Taci bought the Aldershot Animal Hospital and we slept there for six months till our house was built.

I remember when Taci was upset with me because I filed a client card incorrectly, and he couldn’t find it.

I remember when Taci was operating on a dog, and the air smelled bad.

I remember when Taci told Mamička about the clients that visited that day.

I remember our great dane respected and loved Taci a lot.

I remember when Taci built a pool for us in the back yard, and he played with us.

I remember when Taci chasing me and my cousins around the house, and how happy I was to have a dad that played with me.

I remember when Taci built a deck and I helped by holding the measuring tape. Taci kept saying 69″ with each board he measured and from that day forward we called the measuring tape ’69’.

I remember Taci telling me stories about his family, and how life was like in Czechoslovakia.

I remember asking Taci why we left, and I noticed how sad he was, telling me that communism will unlikely fall in our lifetime.

I remember how Taci talked to and respected everyone, even an elevator attendant.

I remember when I asked Taci about the birds and the bees and he told me that you should love someone if you make love.

I remember when Taci would stand by the window and look at the ravine for a long time, thinking about stuff.

I remember when Taci stood in the kitchen, looking depressed, and I wanting to tell him that everything would be OK.

I remember when Taci came out of the house when I was playing basketball. He looked at the house, as if for the last time. As he walked down the street I thought I would never see him again.

I remember Taci laughing,

I remember Taci crying,

I remember that Taci was strong and smart,

I remember that everyone respected Taci,

I remember how everyone loved Taci.

• Introduction by Eva Dusil • Editing by Gabriel Dusil • 2014 November

• The first two years of middle school were hard on me. We learned about farming, agriculture, and how to work the land. But my studies had little to do with animals, and that demotivated me. I was immature and undisciplined. It also aggravated my teachers, and subsequently upset my mother. She frequently had to come to school to smooth things over. I was bored with sitting in class when all I wanted to do was be on the farm. By the third year I found my calling since we were finally allowed to spend time on the school’s farm. I loved to be around the horses. I befriended one of the shepherds and many of the farmers. I was in my element, but quickly learned that the horses were not bred for the aristocratic activities that I had imagined. Instead, once they were mature they were sold to co-ops for farm labor.

• One summer my father kept pestering my mother, asking why I was spending so much time on the farm. He didn’t know what I was doing, or even if I was lying about my whereabouts. Most teenagers my age spent their days at the city pool. I did as well, but then went to the farm in the afternoon. By this time my father had retired. My mother eventually had enough of his nagging and told him to go see for himself. So he dressed up elegantly and accompanied me on this one and only visit to the farm. It was the closest he had ever come to such a grassroots lifestyle. When we arrived he talked to the farm employees and I showed him how I taught a mare to kneel, rear up on her hind legs, and kick on command as I tickled her rump. He was amused and it satisfied his curiosity. Then he watched as I disappeared into the distance on my dappled horse. My father had an excellent sense of humor so it became a running joke, among family and friends, that his daughter was more interested in four legged animals than the two legged kind.

• Introduction by Eva Dusil • Editing by Gabriel Dusil • 2014 November

• I loved animals from the moment I was born. At least that’s what my mother told everyone. Anything on four legs fascinated me. When the circus arrived to my town of Košice, Slovakia, I was the first to run to the park. I watched with longing as the circus performers did their chores, wanting to be part of their daily routine. Other children rushed to see as the circus unfolded. My little heart trembled in the hopes that someone would call out, “Hey, you… Yes you… Come over here and help us!”

• The big moment arrived when they opened to the public and I could finally see the animals. I never had money to buy a ticket, but somehow I always managed to sneak in without being noticed. This was the place of my dreams. It was where I belonged. I loved the smell of horses, monkeys, and the wild cats. The smell of hay was the sweetest smell and remains so till this day. In the morning they would feed the lions and tigers and clean the beautiful Lipizzaner horses. The monkeys screeched as I walked by their cages. There was excitement in the air. I was in heaven.

• Finally the day arrived when my mother took me to the circus. It was a moment of great anticipation. With the little money we had I didn’t experience many circus performances, but this one was magnificent. Since I was a lively child it was difficult to keep me seated for long. I was ready to disappear into the stables at any moment. Nobody could stop me from going to see the horses. All I wanted was to caress and talk to them. I had no fear. I would hug them, blow gently on their nose, touch them as far as I could reach and watch those beautiful dark eyes as they followed me. I was one with them and never wanted to leave.

• Story by Eva Dusil • Editing by Gabriel Dusil • 2014 November

• When I was nine years old we went to visit my relatives in Košice. At the end of their huge garden were military barracks. Curiosity compelled me to climb a concrete wall hiding the surprise that was waiting for me on the other side. I saw what I adored the most – horses! Soldiers that were tending the sables came over and we began to chat. On subsequent visits I spent time with them as they maintained the stables. I soon became a regular visitor. The soldiers warned me that if an officer inquired of my present I should tell them I’m the daughter of a soldier from another barracks. They didn’t want to get into trouble.

• When my mother eventually found out, she was concerned that a young girl was among strange teenage military boys. It wasn’t appropriate. So when I turned eleven she decided to enroll me in the city’s equestrian club. My mother lied about my age since I needed to be at least twelve. The horses from the military barracks had since been sold to the Košice equestrian club, because that military division shut down. So I ended up riding the same horses.

• It was the summer of 1957, and in those days very few girls were riding. It was considered a man’s sport and I was one of only three girls. Being the youngest made it even harder. I was endlessly bullied and intimidated by the boys. Even today I wonder how I had the strength to stand up to them. The regiment of riding and taking care of horses was fierce, and was managed in a military fashion. Competition was relentless, and the trainers were very strict. My parents were at least content knowing where I was spending my afternoons. Nevertheless, I still had to be home by eight o’clock, or I’d be in trouble. Those years certainly taught me discipline.

Education • Photo Restoration • 25 • Mamička • University

• Introduction by Eva Dusil • Editing by Gabriel Dusil • 2014 November

• Those years were quite hard on me – frequently falling in and out of love, and ending up with a broken heart. I’d go skating in the winter with my friends. My oldest brother Csaba would chaperon me to Sunday afternoon tea dances. He was my confidante in matters of the heart. On Sunday evenings I would stroll downtown with my girlfriends and flirt with the boys. I was still horseback riding but by the time I reached the end of middle school my commitment in riding weakened as love interests occupied my time.

• In my teens, I didn’t apply myself. I graduated from middle school with slightly better than average grades. My next step was submitting my application to veterinary college. University education in my country was free and everyone had their own motivation. For me it was clear – I loved animals. But for others it was either parental pressure or they wanted to avoid military duty. Entering university was effective in postponing civil service – reduce it to only six months compared to a standard two year service. Getting into university was less about grades, and more contingent on who your father knew. The system was corrupt and everybody knew it. A consequence of this corruption was a lackadaisical attitude towards education. It wasn’t something that was openly discussed but we felt it subconsciously.

• With my father’s help I was accepted into the University of Veterinary Medicine and Pharmacy in Košice. Although I had a passion for animals I also had to work the system to get accepted to university. From the moment I entered higher education my sloppy attitude towards studying ended. I was stimulated by my surroundings, and proud to be a university student. I attended lectures regularly, even though they weren’t compulsory. I loved anatomy and immensely enjoyed dissecting animals in the lab. I recall on many occasions leaving the lab with blood up to my elbows. I studied parts of the body thoroughly, and it never ceased to amaze me that every little bump, groove, or elevation had a Latin name. Latin was also one of our courses, and continues to be the foundation of communication in medicine. That also helped me when I later learned English. My favorite professor was František Hrudka. He taught Histology and made the subject fascinating – a characteristic that I can’t extend to the other professors. Another favorite of mine was the world famous anatomy professor, Peter Popesko, whose anatomical atlases were used in the University of Guelph. The education system in Czechoslovakia was very different from the West. Most exams were oral. If the professor was in a bad mood, or was having personal problems at the time, it would have an adverse affect on how he conducted the exam. If he had some reservations or personal dislikes towards you – because you didn’t attend his lectures – it would negatively reflect on your final mark – or he would just fail you. We were hostages to the emotional roller coaster and personal biases of our professors.

Relationships • Photo Restoration • 12 • Gabičko • Heather

• By the time I entered my first year of university Heather and I had a more stable relationship. She found some equilibrium in dealing with my personality. My first year of university was very challenging though. Our relationship turned into a long distant one. My residence was three hours away and I would come home on the weekends and holidays to be with Heather and my family. Having a high school sweetheart entering university wasn’t the wisest move, and I knew it at the time. But I was in love, so nothing more can really be said about that.

• My second year was easier because I finished my studies at a university closer to home. (I didn’t transfer because of Heather, but the circumstances is outside the scope of this story, so I won’t go there).  As I finished my third year Heather invited me to her high school prom, but I caused such a stink about something, she ended up going with a classmate. I deserved it. Shortly after that she broke up with me. I was being a douche bag, and she needed to get on with her life. I had many years to grow and mature, and she had far surpassed me in that regard.

• I met Heather at the Aldershot Animal Hospital. She was a volunteer at my mom’s clinic and had already been working there for a few weeks. On this day our paths finally crossed. Eventually Heather joined the payroll, and we ended up working the same shift on Saturdays. At first I got her to do all the dirty work. In the morning one of us had to walk the dogs, and the other cleaned the cages. The cages were always filthy from the night before, so walking the dogs was always the best option. Also, before closing the clinic we needed to vacuum and wash the floors. I hated vacuuming, so that was her job. As time went on Heather ‘s charm had me in role reversal – and I was doing all the dirty work.

• Two years later we started dating. The awkward bit was that we began our relationship when Heather was in ninth grade and I was in grade twelve. In some ways we were a perfect couple with a lot of common interests. I was also infatuated by her. But I couldn’t shake the fact that we had such an age difference. I was never outright ridiculed by my friends, except for a few passing comments.  But because of my adolescent insecurities at the time, it bothered me a lot. As a result, Heather suffered through no less than four breakups over a span of 18 months, and a repeated cycle of me crawling back in shame and regret.
